The Samosa Man

The samosa man steps

to the platform’s edge

and we exchange, my rupees

for a hot pastry through bars

In the distance, brief dawn

glimpses: rows of sugar cane,

bright green fields;

carts rumble along rutted paths,

laundry hangs on strings,

chickens peck in dusty yards.

I glance at the life;

the train moves on.
